You'll be able to access it whenever you need (with an internet connection, of course) without taking up space on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, and you'll also have the peace of mind that your files are safe, more secure than on any hard drive. But it never hurts to have a backup of those photo and video files somewhere physical, just in case. How can we download all our photos from iCloud to save them on our computer or an external hard drive? And what happens if I want to stop using iCloud and start using Google Photos?
Download photos and videos from iCloud
The answer most people will give you is that there's no other way than to download files from iCloud, which can be a bit of a chore depending on the size of your photo library. Mine is almost 400GB, so imagine downloading that manually—it's absolutely insane. Well, that's not the solution at all. There is a much more direct way that will allow you to comfortably access all your files.. You just have to go to the address privacy.apple.com and log in with your iCloud username and password.
By clicking the "Request a copy of your data" link, you'll be able to access all the data Apple has stored about you. Transactions, App Store purchases, map data, contacts, calendar... and, of course, photos. Select the data you want to download and follow the steps provided. You will need to choose the size of the files you want to download, from 1GB to 25GB (maximum). Apple will generate these files and send you an email with instructions on how to download them all. The number of files you download will depend on the total size of your library.
Transfer data to other services
From this service, you can not only choose to download files, but you can also transfer them to other services. Currently, only two transfers are allowed: Apple Music to YouTube Music, and iCloud Photos to Google Photos. You'll need to select the "Request a copy of your data transfer" option on the main screen, and then simply follow the steps to complete the process. Two things to keep in mind:
- You will not be able to transfer data if you have advanced data protection activated, you must first deactivate it.
- You'll need to make sure that your Google Photos space is enough to store all the photos you have in iCloud Photos.
