US says goodbye to TikTok as of January 19

TikTok

The popular (and addictive) short video app, TikTok is on the verge of a ban in the United States, scheduled for January 19, 2025. The move follows the passing of a law requiring ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, to divest itself of the app due to national security concerns. The US Supreme Court has heard arguments back and forth on the matter, and most justices appear to be leaning towards upholding the ban – will this come to Europe?

The main concern of the judges (and politicians) is the possibility that the Chinese government has access to sensitive data of millions of American users. Something that, on the other hand, is absurd to doubt. Despite the efforts of TikTok representatives to assure that user data is stored on American servers and that the company operates independently, the authorities do not seem convinced that this is the case. A clear example is the US blockade of Apple's main competitor, Huawei.

If the ban is carried out, TikTok reportedly removed from US app stores, preventing further downloads. Current users may experience difficulties accessing the platform, and updates and technical support may cease, affecting the app’s functionality in the medium term.

The situation has sparked intense debate about freedom of expression and the impact on the millions of content creators who rely on TikTok as a means of communication and economic support. It also raises serious questions about the future of US-China trade and technological relations. And this is, I believe, the main reason why this will not happen in Europe.

The Supreme Court is expected to issue a final decision before January's 19Meanwhile, TikTok users in the United States remain on tenterhooks, anticipating the outcome of this controversy that could change the influencer universe in the North American country.
