The messaging app WhatsApp has begun allowing users to reserve usernames ahead of the official launch of its new communication system. Until now, the platform required a phone number as the identifier to connect with other users. This update seeks to change the current dynamic so that people can interact without needing to share their most private personal data.
The booking process will be rolled out gradually starting this week, so not all users will have immediate access. The company will send a direct notification as soon as the option is available for each account. Usernames will be entirely optional and can be configured from the Settings menu, within the Account section.
Technical requirements and social network compatibility
The platform's terms and conditions stipulate that selected names must be between 3 and 35 characters long. With over three billion people registered on the service, the company has decided to open the registration process early. The main objective of this preliminary move is to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to choose the identifier that truly interests them.
To simplify the process, content creators, small businesses, and organizations will benefit from direct integration with other Meta platforms. Those with a verified identity on Instagram or Facebook can request the exact same name for their messaging profile. This linking will be available through a dedicated option, provided the identifier has not been previously registered.
The company has confirmed that there will be no public directory of usernames for searching profiles, nor will there be automatic discovery suggestions. To start a conversation with someone, it will be essential to know the exact text of the identifier the recipient has set. Additionally, an optional username key will be introduced that will act as an extra layer of protection against spam.

The full implementation of this security feature will be rolled out gradually over the next few months. Once the system is fully active, the changes will directly affect the visibility of personal data. Accounts that have a username set up will no longer display their phone number when sending messages to strangers or businesses.
