How to take JPEG photos with iOS 11 instead of the new HEIF format

With the arrival of iOS 11, Apple has introduced two new formats, both for photos and videos, formats that They allow us to save a lot of space on our device compared to the traditional JPEG / H.264. These new recording formats are only available from iPhone 7, so older devices, iPhone 6s and lower, cannot enjoy this option.

The problem of the new format occurs when we want share with others who do not have a compatible iPhone model, the photographs videos that we take. Fortunately, iOS 11 allows us to continue using the traditional JPEG format instead of making use of the new HEIF for photos and HEVC for videos.

The HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) format uses the .heic extension, it is only compatible with iPhone 7 onwards with iOS 11 and with Macs with macOS High Sierra. If when sharing the photos with other people you shoulds take into account the compatibility of the receiving device, so if your environment does not have these devices, then we will show you how to continue taking photographs in JPEG format, a format that occupies almost twice that of HEIF.

  • First we go to Settings.
  • Inside Settings we look for the Camera section.
  • Inside Camera, the different resolutions in which the camera of our iPhone records video is shown, but what interests us is right at the end, in Formats, a section that is only found if we have an iPhone 7 onwards.
  • When clicking on Formats, two options are displayed: High Efficiency or Most Compatible. By default, the High efficiency option is selected, this option is the one that uses the new video and audio compression format that saves half the space. But if we prefer not to have problems when sharing the videos and photos that we make, we must select the most compatible.
